Yes, it really is possible to still travel once the children come along!
My husband and I have personally travelled to over 140 countries and taken our two children to over 70 countries starting when our daughter was only 3- months old. The secret is to be really organised and we find that it is a much more successful holiday the more planning we have done before we leave home.
With family spread throughout South Australia and in New Zealand there were many visits to our respective homes when the kids were younger. Our trips to South Australia, we tried to take a different route each time when driving to and from Sydney and in New Zealand, we would see the family in Wellington and combine that with a few days visiting a different part of either the North and South Island on most visits.
Along with these annual journeys, we travelled overseas on a 3 – 10-week trip every second year to places that we still had on our bucket list. As the kids got older, we planned more extensive trips and have enjoyed creating priceless family memories. Here are some of the journeys we have taken with the kids:
USA/Canada 3 weeks: Sydney – USA (San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Chicago, New York & Dallas)-Canada (Quebec, Montreal). Child aged 3 months.
Japan/South Korea 3 weeks: Sydney – South Korea (Seoul – Busan) – Japan (travelled all around). Child aged 21 months.
Thailand/Cambodia/UK/Italy/China 5 weeks: Sydney – Bangkok (Thailand)- Siem Reap (Cambodia) – United Kingdom – Italy – China (Beijing, Xian & Shanghai). Kids aged 23 months and 4 years old
Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos 3 weeks: Sydney – Vietnam (HCMC, Mekong Delta, Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An) – Phnomh Penh (Cambodia) – Laos (Vientianne & Luang Prabang). Kids aged 3(almost 4) and 6 years old
Tonga/Samoa/USA/Cook Islands 4 weeks: Sydney – Tonga – Samoa & American Samoa – USA (LA, Dallas, Memphis & surrounding areas & Vegas) – Cook Islands. Kids aged 6 and 8 years old
Tahiti/South America 10 weeks: Sydney – Tahiti – Bora Bora – Easter Island – Chile – Colombia – Ecuador (Galapagos Islands) – Peru – Bolivia – Paraguay – Brazil – Argentina and Uruguay. Kids aged 8 and 10
Dubai/Oman/Qatar/Bahrain/Kenya/Tanzania/Zanzibar 3 weeks: Sydney – Dubai – Oman – Qatar – Bahrain – Kenya – Tanzania – Zanzibar. Kids aged 10 and 12
Europe/Hong Kong 2 weeks: Sydney – Europe (Rome, Florence Venice & Paris) – Hong Kong. Kids aged 11 and 13
Mexico/Central America/USA 6 weeks: Sydney – Mexico – Cuba – Panama – Costa Rica – Nicaragua – Honduras – El Salvador – Guatemala – Belize – USA (LA). Kids aged 11 and 13
Brunei/Borneo/Myanmar/Thailand 3 weeks: Sydney – Kuala Lumpur – Brunei – Borneo – Myanmar – Thailand (Chang Mai & Phuket). Kids aged 12 and 14
Singapore/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka/Maldives 3 weeks: Sydney – Singapore – Bangladesh – Sri Lanka – Maldives. Kids aged 13 and 15
Caribbean/Puerto Rico/Chile 2 weeks: Sydney – Dallas – Bahamas – Turks & Caicos – British Virgin Islands – US Virgin Islands – Puerto Rico – Chile. Kids aged 13 & 15
